“One aspect of the work that is important to me is its connection to traditional “women’s work” – I am using the same techniques used by women throughout the centuries, at the same time using these techniques to address themes that face us in the 21st century. These include literacy, immigration, feminist consciousness, climate change and species extinction.”
- Lucia LaVilla-Havelin
Lucia LaVilla-Havelin has been a working artist for almost 50 years, pushing the boundaries of stitchery, using traditional “women’s work” in unexpected ways, while addressing contemporary subject matter. All the work is designed and hand-stitched by LaVilla-Havelin.
She has had numerous solo exhibitions in both Texas and New York State. Her work has been exhibited nationally in invitational and juried shows, including in Arizona, California, Maryland, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Tennessee and Virginia, and at the Indianapolis Art Center in “Women’s Work”.
LaVilla-Havelin was part of the exhibit “State of Stitch”, a show of art by eleven Texas women who use stitching to create their art on tour throughout Texas. “State of Stitch” began and the University of Texas at San Antonio and traveled to the Beeville Art Museum and the San Angelo Museum of Fine, among other sites. LaVilla-Havelin is represented by Studio Comfort Gallery in the Hill Country of Texas. Her current exhibition “The Meditative Activist” at the Brownsville Museum of Fine Art is her first solo museum exhibition.
Images of LaVilla-Havelin’s work have been published in American Craft Magazine and Surface Design Journal. Her artwork can be found in over 40 private collections throughout the United States.
